Memphis, TN – A winter storm warning remains in effect for parts of Mississippi through 6 a.m. Saturday, bringing snow, ice, and hazardous travel conditions.
The National Weather Service issued the warning for Calhoun, Chickasaw, Monroe, Tallahatchie, and Yalobusha counties. Heavy snow is expected, with accumulations up to 2 inches, along with ice buildup under one-tenth of an inch. Precipitation began Thursday evening and will continue intermittently through early Saturday.
Forecasters caution that roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and dangerous. Friday morning and evening commutes could see significant disruptions. Residents are urged to avoid travel if possible and to prepare for icy conditions.
“If travel is necessary, motorists should pack essentials like food, water, and a flashlight in case of emergencies,” officials advised. Emergency responders are prepared for increased incidents, but delays are possible during peak snowfall.
Additional snowfall and icy conditions are also impacting neighboring areas in Arkansas and Tennessee, where accumulations are projected to reach up to 6 inches. Mississippi’s affected regions, however, are expected to see mixed precipitation that could make roads even more treacherous.
Temperatures will remain below freezing through Saturday morning, intensifying the risk of ice forming on untreated surfaces. Residents should stay indoors and monitor weather alerts.
