Libertyville, IL – Two 19-year-olds have been charged in connection with a violent carjacking in Libertyville that left a woman injured and her two-year-old son briefly abducted.
The incident occurred on February 23, 2023, when a 34-year-old woman was assaulted in her driveway in unincorporated Libertyville. The woman had just returned home and was retrieving her toddler from her vehicle when a white BMW pulled in behind her car. A male suspect exited the BMW, attacked the woman, and stole her Volkswagen Atlas with the child inside.
The suspects fled the scene, running over the victim in the process. She sustained serious injuries but managed to call 911.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, a bystander in Waukegan found the child abandoned in a parking lot shortly after the carjacking. Law enforcement quickly located the stolen vehicle nearby.
After an extensive investigation, detectives identified two suspects—both 17 at the time of the crime. The individuals, now 19, are in custody on unrelated charges. Due to their ages at the time of the offense, their cases were referred to juvenile court. However, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office is pursuing their prosecution as adults.
The woman remains in recovery from her injuries. Anyone with further information about the stolen BMW involved in the incident is urged to contact Lake County Crime Stoppers.
Authorities remind the public that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
