Kansas City, MO – Freezing rain and light snow are forecast to sweep through northern Missouri tonight, creating hazardous road conditions. Travelers along I-70 and surrounding areas should prepare for slippery roads and reduced visibility.
According to the National Weather Service, light freezing drizzle and snow accumulation of less than an inch are expected overnight. Temperatures will drop to around 29°F, keeping roads below freezing into Sunday morning. Affected areas include the Kansas City Metro and regions north of Highway 65. Drivers are urged to proceed with caution and allow extra time for travel.
Sunday’s forecast improves slightly, with partly sunny skies and high temperatures reaching 34°F. However, a cold front moving in by Monday will bring frigid air, with lows plunging to single digits and daytime highs struggling to surpass 22°F. The cold snap will persist into early next week, with Tuesday morning lows in the teens and wind chills making it feel even colder.
Residents should take precautions to stay warm, such as layering clothing, keeping outdoor pets sheltered, and protecting pipes from freezing. Check road conditions before heading out by visiting MoDOT’s traveler information website or using their mobile app.
Looking ahead, the Kansas City area will see mostly sunny skies by midweek, with temperatures climbing back into the upper 20s. Despite the brief break, additional winter systems could develop later in the week. Stay tuned to local weather updates for the latest forecasts and warnings.
