Des Moines, IA – Central Iowa residents should prepare for freezing mist and light snow Saturday evening as temperatures continue to drop. Areas east of I-35 may see minor snow accumulations of up to half an inch, creating slick spots on roadways.
According to the National Weather Service, the wintry mix will arrive by late afternoon, with freezing mist lingering into the evening. Gusty winds will make conditions feel even colder, while Sunday temperatures will struggle to rise above 23 degrees. The wind chill will push “feels like” temperatures into the single digits by Sunday morning, and conditions are expected to worsen early next week.
Monday and Tuesday will bring the coldest weather, with highs around 18 degrees and morning wind chills plunging as low as -15 to -20 degrees. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure and dress in layers to prevent frostbite. Sunny skies will return Tuesday, but temperatures will remain frigid.
Drivers should exercise caution tonight and Sunday, especially along I-35 and other major routes, as freezing mist and light snow could cause hazardous road conditions.
Looking ahead, temperatures will gradually improve by midweek, with highs near 29 degrees Wednesday and 40 degrees Thursday. Until then, expect bitterly cold mornings and icy conditions. Stay updated with the latest forecasts and prepare for winter travel by carrying emergency supplies in your vehicle.
