Champaign, IL – Drivers across central Illinois should be cautious today as light snow and freezing drizzle are creating hazardous road conditions, especially near I-55. Snowfall is expected to taper off by midday, but untreated surfaces may remain slippery as temperatures hover near freezing.
According to the National Weather Service, less than an inch of snow is expected, though icy patches from freezing drizzle could persist into the afternoon. Wind gusts of up to 25 mph will make outdoor conditions uncomfortable, with wind chills nearing zero degrees by tonight.
Roadways across central Illinois, particularly north of I-72, may be slick. Officials urge motorists to reduce speed and allow extra travel time. Temperatures are forecast to rise into the mid-30s this afternoon, potentially melting some icy spots, but freezing conditions will return overnight.
Looking ahead, Monday will bring clearer skies but frigid conditions, with highs only reaching 17 degrees. Wind chills could drop below zero. Another round of light snow is possible Tuesday morning, with accumulation likely to remain minimal. Bitter cold will persist through midweek, with lows plunging into the single digits or lower.
Residents should ensure they have proper cold-weather gear and avoid prolonged exposure to the elements. Pet owners are encouraged to keep animals indoors during the cold snap.
