Lafayette, IN – Troopers are managing multiple crashes across Indiana as heavy snow blankets the region, making roads treacherous. One slide-off incident forced the closure of the US 231 entrance ramp to I-65 northbound Friday night.
According to Indiana State Police-Lafayette District, crews are clearing the ramp, which is expected to remain closed for about one hour. Snow and ice have created hazardous driving conditions, with crashes reported throughout the district. Authorities urge drivers to slow down and stay alert if they must travel during the ongoing winter storm.
The National Weather Service reports snow accumulations of 4-6 inches in parts of Indiana, with more expected overnight. Bitterly cold temperatures are causing untreated roads to freeze quickly, exacerbating the danger.
State police warn that the snowstorm is likely to continue causing accidents through Saturday morning. Drivers should exercise extreme caution, increase following distances, and avoid sudden braking to reduce the risk of losing control.
As of Friday evening, troopers remain on the scene of the slide-off and other incidents in the area. Plow crews are working continuously to improve road conditions, but delays are still likely.
Residents should check for updates and monitor conditions before heading out. State authorities emphasize that staying off the roads, if possible, is the safest choice during this severe weather.
