Central Illinois – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for central Illinois through midnight Friday as snow continues to fall across the region. Accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with slippery road conditions already impacting commuters along major routes like I-72 and US-150.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, IL, snowfall is expected to taper off this evening, but travel will remain hazardous as temperatures drop. Gusty winds will further reduce visibility, especially in rural areas. Residents are urged to allow extra time for travel, slow down, and check road conditions at GettingAroundIllinois.com.
The weekend forecast calls for partly sunny skies Saturday with a high near 27°F, but temperatures will plummet Sunday night, bringing wind chills below zero. A 40% chance of snow returns Sunday afternoon, potentially adding to existing icy conditions.
By Monday, conditions will clear with mostly sunny skies, but the high will struggle to reach 19°F. Overnight lows early next week will dip into the single digits, creating prolonged risks of frostbite for anyone outside without proper protection.
Drivers are advised to prepare for icy roads and use caution during evening and weekend commutes. Shoveling snow and outdoor activities should be approached with care, especially as wind chills could drop as low as -10°F Sunday night.
