Little Rock, AR – A winter storm is sweeping through Arkansas, bringing heavy snow and ice through Friday evening. Officials warn of dangerous travel conditions statewide.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), areas south of Interstate 30 and east of Interstate 40, including Little Rock, can expect 2 to 4 inches of snow. Ice accumulations could reach a quarter-inch in southern Arkansas. Northern regions face heavier snowfall, with totals ranging from 6 to 10 inches and isolated areas potentially exceeding that amount.
Additional snow accumulations between 1 and 9 inches are forecast through Friday. Ice buildup is expected to reach two-tenths of an inch, particularly in central and southern Arkansas.
The storm is causing significant hazards, including slick roads, icy bridges, and challenging driving conditions. The NWS advises against unnecessary travel. The Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes will be particularly impacted.
Travelers should prepare for emergencies by keeping a flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles. State officials urge residents to call 511 for updated road conditions and consider postponing travel. If travel is unavoidable, extreme caution is advised.
This winter weather event is part of a broader system affecting much of the South. Power outages are possible due to the ice and heavy snow on power lines. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local updates.
The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Friday.
