Tulsa, OK – A winter storm warning remains in effect for portions of Oklahoma and Arkansas as heavy snow blankets the region. Between 5 and 8 inches of snow is expected through Friday morning, along with a light glaze of ice.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the warning began early Thursday and will last until noon Friday. Areas affected include east-central and southeast Oklahoma, as well as northwest Arkansas. In Okfuskee and Okmulgee counties, snow totals between 4 and 6 inches are forecast.
The storm has already created treacherous road conditions, especially during Thursday’s evening commute. The NWS warns that hazardous conditions may persist through Friday morning, making travel potentially dangerous. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Those who must venture out should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, in case they get stranded.
The weather system could also disrupt local utilities. Residents are advised to prepare for potential power outages by ensuring cell phones are charged and backup heat sources are available.
State transportation departments are actively working to maintain roadways, but continued snowfall and icy conditions may hinder progress. Oklahoma travelers can monitor updates through okRoads.org or call 1-844-465-4997. Arkansas residents can check road conditions via idrivearkansas.com or call 1-800-245-1672.
Officials caution residents to prioritize safety and avoid unnecessary risks during this severe winter weather event.
