Ukrainian special forces initiated a southern counteroffensive on June 8, targeting Russian positions near Mala Tokmachka in Zaporizhzhia Oblast

Following this setback, Ukrainian special forces, including the army and territorial brigades, adjusted their strategy. They shifted away from direct assaults on Russian fortifications, opting for slower, foot-based flanking maneuvers to gain ground. This tactical Ukrainian special forces shift proved essential for their subsequent operations.

An analysis by Jack Watling and Nick Reynolds from the Royal United Services Institute underscores this strategic shift. After initial failures, the focus of Ukrainian special forces shifted toward ground acquisition while prioritizing the preservation of equipment and personnel.

One notable operation occurred on June 3, when Ukrainian special forces launched an assault on Russian positions in Novodarivka, resulting in a dire outcome

The subsequent decision to prioritize flanking efforts over frontal assaults paved the way for further successes. This revised approach involved calculated tactics, including the use of explosive charges to clear minefields. Although some challenges persisted, such as boggy terrain and enemy engagement, the Ukrainians persevered. By prioritizing flanking maneuvers and employing feints to divert Russian attention, Ukrainian special forces successfully liberated key territories, albeit with some losses.

This strategic shift has proven effective, enabling the 33rd and 47th Mechanized Brigades to make significant advances toward Russian-occupied Melitopol. As the counteroffensive progresses into its fourth month, it is anticipated that Ukrainian special forces will continue to employ these calculated flanking attacks, prioritizing the conservation of resources and Ukrainian lives.
