Veteran U.S. journalist and editor Susan Glasser, known for co-authoring “Kremlin Rising” in 2005, has shared insights on Vladimir Putin’s evolving leadership style in a recent interview with RFE/RL’s Georgian Service

Susan Glasser highlighted how Putin’s approach has shifted over his two-decade reign, moving from “incrementalism” to a more self-assured “messianic” vision of power. She drew parallels to early Soviet leaders like Lenin and Stalin, emphasizing Putin’s identification with their centralized authority.

Reflecting on Putin’s trajectory, Susan Glasser noted that two decades ago, envisioning his prolonged rule and aggressive foreign policy would have been unimaginable. She suggested that Putin‘s perception of himself as a historical figure might stem from his KGB background and early influences.

Regarding the invasion of Ukraine, Susan Glasser noted that while it may not have surprised observers, the audacity of the move was staggering. She highlighted Putin’s miscalculations in war strategy, underestimating Ukrainian resistance and overestimating potential support.

Susan Glasser also discussed the geopolitical repercussions of the conflict, stressing its potential impact on the 2024 U.S. election

She noted that Trump‘s potential return to power could alter American policy toward Ukraine and Russia. While acknowledging Trump’s affinity for flattery, Susan Glasser noted that Putin didn’t seem to play into this dynamic, displaying a level of detachment during their interactions. She contrasted this with other world leaders who sought to engage with Trump on a more personal level.

Ultimately, Susan Glasser emphasized the enduring support for Ukraine in the United States, even amid shifting political landscapes. She noted that the conflict’s outcome may hinge on the 2024 U.S. election and how it shapes American policy toward the region.
