These designations, which were initially reported by Reuters, specifically target shipping and trade firms accused of assisting in the repair of vessels subject to sanctions connected to Russia’s defense ministry.

The Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. administration has imposed sanctions on five Turkish companies and a Turkish national, alleging their involvement in aiding Russia to evade sanctions and supporting Moscow’s aggression against Ukraine

They are also accused of facilitating the transfer of “dual-use goods.” This action is part of a broader set of measures aimed at imposing sanctions on over 150 targets related to Russia, including the country’s largest car manufacturer. This Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. administration imposed sanctions come at a crucial juncture for U.S.-Turkey relations, with the hope that Ankara will confirm NATO membership for Sweden when the Turkish parliament reconvenes in early October.

The Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. administration and its allies have applied extensive sanctions on Russia. However, supply routes from neighboring Black Sea countries like Turkey have remained accessible. Washington has repeatedly cautioned against the export of goods like chemicals and microchips that can be used in Moscow’s war efforts. To this end, various senior U.S. officials, including Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, have made visits to Turkey as part of an exerted effort to prevent Turkish companies from aiding Russia in bypassing U.S. restrictions.

The U.S. Treasury Department has stated that sanctions have been placed on companies such as Margiana Insaat Dis Ticaret and Demirci Bilisim Ticaret Sanayi

Margiana Insaat Dis Ticaret is accused of making numerous shipments to sanctioned Russian entities involved in producing military drones for the war in Ukraine, while Demirci Bilisim Ticaret Sanayi is accused of sending sensors and measuring tools to Russia. The Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. administration has also imposed sanctions on Denkar Ship Construction for offering ship repair services to previously designated vessels linked to the Russian Defense Ministry.
