The White House has approved a new $250 million aid package for Ukraine, consisting of air defense, artillery, anti-tank weapons, and small arms ammunition. This comes as doubts arise about the U.S.’s ability to maintain its role as Kyiv’s main supporter against Russian aggression, approaching the second anniversary of Vladimir Putin‘s invasion. The total American aid to Ukraine, encompassing military, financial, and humanitarian assistance, has surpassed $79 billion since the war began on February 24, 2022, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
Latest Aid Package and Doubts
The White House recently approved $250 million in military aid to Ukraine, comprising various weaponry. Doubts linger about the U.S.’s sustained role as Kyiv’s primary backer amid Putin’s ongoing invasion nearing its second anniversary.
The total aid provided by the U.S. to Ukraine since the war’s commencement exceeds $79 billion, covering military, financial, and humanitarian assistance. This aid, detailed by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, has supported not only military efforts but also the Ukrainian people, refugees, law enforcement, and independent radio broadcasters.
Despite President Joe Biden‘s announcements of substantial military support for Ukraine, there are challenges in securing further aid. Biden seeks a $110 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and national security needs, with a significant portion allocated to Kyiv. However, disagreements, particularly from Republicans pushing for enhanced U.S.-Mexico border security, pose obstacles to reaching an agreement.

Funding Challenges and Future Prospects
Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Garron Garn notes funding challenges, stating there is no more funding to replace weapons from department stocks. The Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which funds future weapons contracts, is also depleted.
There is optimism that Ukraine assistance will pass, but potential conditions may include incorporating tougher security measures on the U.S.-Mexico border into any military aid deal. The broader legislative foreign aid package faces complexities, with various political factions seeking concessions.
