UAE Resolution on Gaza: US Alters Text, Secures Agreement for Friday Vote

The UAE resolution called for increased Gaza humanitarian supplies and a “suspension” of fighting. USA Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced the Friday voting agreement. To avoid a veto, the US changed the text, postponing the resolution. The word “cessation of hostilities” became “suspension.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated the Biden administration’s intention of ending the war fast amid international pressure on Israel. He also called for international pressure on Hamas to resolve the conflict. The Hamas-run Health Ministry reported approximately 20,000 Gaza deaths, including 8,000 children.

Hamas refused to free hostages until Israel committed to a “full cessation” of Gaza warfare. Hamas said this decision is based on a Palestinian national desire to cease hostilities before considering detainees or negotiations. Hamas did not identify the Palestinian factions.
