Thanks to a measure that Governor Ron DeSantis passed on Thursday that would permit the judges to suggest the death sentence with no unanimous majority, Florida would now have a minimum requirement for applying the death penalty.
The choice made by a Florida jury to convict the shooter who killed seventeen individuals in the 2018 Parkland, Florida, school massacre to a life sentence in jail without the possibility of parole the previous year served as the inspiration for the move, that would enable jurors to suggest the death penalty with an 8-4 vote. State law needed a unanimous majority to approve the death punishment, however, the jury, in that case, decided in favor of it 9-3.
Based on the state’s legislative internet pages, DeSantis, whose been visiting the nation ahead of an anticipated 2024 Republican presidential bid, secretly accepted and approved the measure on Thursday. He didn’t sign any bills in front of the public.
