The mayor of a border city troubled by illegal immigration claimed on Thursday that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott abruptly seized over a public park on Wednesday.
As aspect of Abbott’s emergency declaration to address the migrant problem, Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas claimed the state commandeered Shelby Park and built gates to keep out residents — along with federal border officials — without giving any notice.
Migrants using the risky Rio Grande to enter Texas have overrun Shelby Park, which borders the river.
In a passionate statement on Thursday, Salinas declared, “That is not a choice that we agreed to.”
“We did not want this to happen. It is not anything that the city requested.”
