According to the type of beer, the amount of alcohol it contains, and the number of servings, the amount of calories in alcohol may differ significantly. A 12-ounce (355 ml) portion of beer typically has 150 calories, however, this can vary from 55 calories for a mild beer to 450 calories for an imported beer with a high alcohol content.

Beer’s alcohol and carbohydrate levels are the main factors that affect how many calories it contains. As alcohol alone is very rich in calories, beers with a greater alcohol level often have higher calories than beers that have less alcohol levels. Beer gets its carbohydrates from the cereals required in the brewing process, and beers with more carbohydrates often have higher calories than beers with less carbohydrates.

Additionally, it’s important to keep in mind that drinking beer can result in ingesting more calories in general since individuals may be more inclined to eat unhealthily or eat more meals than they might otherwise. Therefore, it is advised to drink beer—or another alcoholic beverage—in moderation to prevent negative health effects.
