What Local Citizens Should Know About the October 4 National Emergency Alert Test

On October 4, 2023, the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) will be tested nationally by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The exam will begin at approximately 2:20 PM ET. The 3rd nationwide test—and the second to cover all mobile devices—is already underway.

Depending on the settings of the device, the WEA test can be transmitted to consumer mobile phones in either English or Spanish. Radios and TVs are going to broadcast the EAS test.

The current nationwide EAS exam is the 7th place. To guarantee a seamless test and reduce public misunderstandings, FEMA, the FCC, EAS participants, telecom providers, emergency managers, and other interested parties are cooperating. The test’s objective is to evaluate these systems’ effectiveness.
