Kimberly has become an advocate for sensible gun laws and has participated in rallies and worked with elected officials to bring about change.
Kimberly Mata-Rubio, a grieving mother from Uvalde, Texas, has been fighting to prevent further mass shootings after her 10-year-old daughter, Lexi Rubio, was tragically killed
Kimberly’s main goal is to ensure that children have a chance to grow up and that parents don’t have to experience the pain she feels. She believes that honoring Lexi’s life through action is the best way to remember her daughter and make a difference in the world. However, in Texas, where gun safety laws face resistance from the Republican-controlled government, Kimberly’s efforts have faced significant challenges.
The recent school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, where three children and three staff members were killed, and the mall shooting in Allen, Texas, where eight people, including three children, lost their lives, have further devastated Kimberly. She understands the anguish and grief that these parents are going through and wishes to prevent any more parents from enduring the same pain.
Kimberly continues to share memories of Lexi through her Instagram account and participates in activities like blowing bubbles with children to keep her daughter’s spirit alive
Her husband, Felix Rubio, who was a sheriff’s deputy, resigned after the shooting, and together, they are trying to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.
On the anniversary of the tragedy, the parents of the victims plan to hold a candlelight vigil and release butterflies in remembrance of the lives lost. Kimberly urges those who cannot attend to light a candle at home to honor the victims. She wants her daughter’s name to be associated with her bright smile and remembers Lexi as an energetic, intelligent, compassionate, and athletic young girl.
