The US Space Force has temporarily restricted its members from using personal generative AI accounts while on duty

Major Tanya Downsworth, a spokesperson for the US Space Force, emphasized that this measure is in place to safeguard the data of service members and Guardians. While the memo didn’t specify the particular AI model in question, it marks the US Space Force’s acknowledgment of AI tools and its effort to establish guidelines. In July, the Chief Administrative Office of the US House of Representatives also limited the use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, permitting only the premium ChatGPT Plus service under specific conditions.

Costa emphasized that every Guardian is responsible for adhering to cybersecurity, data handling, and procurement requirements when using generative AI

The memo outlined key points, including the need for CTIO approval for AI model trials, the separation of personal AI accounts from official affiliations and restrictions on certain generative AI tools on government devices.

Despite these precautions, the US Space Force remains optimistic about the future role of AI in space and military operations. Major Downsworth stated that these technologies have the potential to revolutionize their workforce, particularly in areas like Space Domain Awareness and Command and Control. The US Space Force’s CTIO is actively engaged in the Department of Defense’s GenAI task force, TF-Lima, which aims to harness these technologies responsibly and strategically.
