US Military Multi-disciplinary Effort to Safeguard Coastal Communities from Climate Change

The University of Miami  is leading a big project called X REEFS to help protect the oceans and shorelines from climate change. The US Military are making a special kind of reef that can handle hotter temperatures and stronger waves caused by climate change. The project got a lot of money from DARPA and other groups over $7.5 million so far and more might come.

The X REEFS project has a team of different experts like coral scientists, airplane engineers and water experts. They are working together to design and build this new reef. It is different from regular reefs because it will be close to shore and stay underwater even when the tide is low. The reef will have three parts including a strong concrete chamber called the sea hive, special concrete shapes and fake corals called coral mimics. They hope this reef will protect marine life and help stop floods as sea levels rise.

The main goal of the project is to make a reef that helps animals in the ocean and also keeps the shore safe from storms and high water. If it works it could really help coastal areas deal with climate change. The X REEFS project is an important step in protecting our oceans and adapting to the changes happening because of climate change.
