In an effort to emphasize the independence of the justice system, Rocah, a Democrat, stated that she approached the investigation impartially, treating every subject and organization equally.
The criminal investigation into the valuation practices of a Trump golf course in Westchester County, New York, has concluded after two years
The closure of the investigation was first reported by Insider and was confirmed by Rocah during a press conference that also addressed arrests and updates in cold case homicides. Following the news, former President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his desire to restore his reputation, insisting that he had done nothing wrong.
Prosecutors in Westchester County had issued subpoenas for records from the town of Ossining and Trump National Golf Club Westchester as part of their inquiry into the club’s attempts to reduce its local tax burden. The golf club and the town had been in dispute over the property’s tax bill, with the club arguing that its value was significantly lower than the town’s assessment. In July 2021, a compromise was reached, resulting in a refund of around $875,000 to the club and a nearly 30% reduction in the property assessment.
The investigation was led by Elliott Jacobson, a former assistant U.S. Attorney who had come out of retirement to serve as the special prosecutor
Jacobson, who had been volunteering part-time for the district attorney’s office, concluded his service in November 2022. While the focus of the investigation was the club’s efforts to decrease its valuation, the club was also mentioned in a 2022 lawsuit filed by the New York Attorney General‘s office against Trump and his company. The lawsuit alleged that Trump had inflated the value of the golf club, along with other properties, to overstate his net worth. The case is scheduled for trial in October.
Trump and his company have consistently denied all allegations related to the New York Attorney General’s case. The conclusion of the Westchester County investigation represents a rare legal victory for Trump, who has faced multiple legal challenges in recent years, including lawsuits and criminal charges.
Rocah emphasized that prosecutorial decisions are not driven by politics and expressed her hope that the public would understand the impartiality of the justice system. Trump and his representatives did not provide any comments regarding the investigation’s closure.
