Morgan Moore, a 17-year-old transgender boy with disabilities from Maryland, passed away on May 10, 2022, at his residence in Montgomery Village

Morgan Moore’s passing has recently gained attention as one of the distressing instances of violent deaths among transgender individuals in 2022. Regrettably, some initial media reports inaccurately misgendered Morgan Moore upon his passing.

Authorities were alerted when Morgan Moore was found unresponsive at home, prompting police and paramedics to respond to the scene. Astonishingly, he weighed merely 79 pounds, and it was revealed that he hadn’t received medical attention for a span of two years. Morgan Moore’s father and mother, Dominique and Cynthia Moore reported this neglect. Morgan Moore had been contending with diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and the lingering effects of COVID-19. His health had deteriorated to the point where he could no longer walk, and he suffered from an abscess on his back.

Living conditions within the household were dire, with 10 occupants comprising adults and children. The authorities intervened by removing six minor children from the Moores’ care and placing them in foster homes. Shockingly unsanitary conditions were discovered, marked by animal waste, dysfunctional toilets, inadequate lighting, and insufficient beds for the family members. The children’s education was limited to homeschooling, and they were largely isolated, mainly interacting with the outside world through video games.

Morgan Moore was openly transgender, although not all members of the family acknowledged or respected his identity

Despite the challenges he faced, he was celebrated as a self-taught musician, skilled cook, and talented artist. His aspiration to visit Japan highlighted his zest for life.

As the case unfolded, the local medical examiner took time to classify Morgan Moore’s death as a homicide. Subsequently, in May, both of his parents were charged with second-degree murder along with six counts of neglect of a minor.

Tori Cooper, the director of community engagement for the Human Rights Campaign’s Transgender Justice Initiative, expressed the profound impact of Morgan Moore’s story, emphasizing the need for equal love and respect for individuals with disabilities, particularly among marginalized communities. The tragic loss of Morgan Moore serves as a poignant reminder to strive for a more compassionate and inclusive society.
