Five young women tragically lost their lives in a car crash in south Minneapolis on Friday night

The group of inseparable friends had been out together, making preparations for a friend’s upcoming wedding. According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, a state trooper had noticed the speeding driver on an interstate at approximately 10:15 p.m. However, before the trooper could intervene, the driver exited the interstate, ran a red light, and crashed into the victim’s vehicle at an intersection. The speeding vehicle continued to flee the scene but was eventually apprehended by the police. Authorities suspect that the driver may have been impaired at the time of the incident.

The Dar Al Farooq Islamic Center, where the victims were affiliated, identified the young women as Sabiriin Ali, Sahra Gesaade, Salma Abdikadir, Sagal Hersi, and Siham Adam. The center has initiated a fundraiser to support the families of the deceased. The loss of these vibrant individuals, described by the Dar Al Farooq Center Mosque Director Khalid Omar as “the pearls” and “the bright stars” of their community, has left a deep impact.

Memorials began to emerge at the crash site the following morning, reflecting the collective grief and shock experienced by the community

City Councilmember Jamal Osman expressed frustration and sorrow over the fact that the driver responsible for the tragedy attempted to flee before being apprehended.

Law enforcement officials have yet to release the identity of the driver and are currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving and the importance of road safety.
