A 52-year-old father named Thomas Ross Gatewood entered a plea of not guilty to charges detailing the horrific abuse he inflicted on his two young daughters, which ultimately led to the untimely death of 8-year-old Jeanetta Gatewood. The case has shocked the city of Wichita. The horrifying details, which showed the girls’ terrifying months-long ordeal of torture and seclusion, surfaced during court proceedings. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gatewood kept his girls isolated from the outer world, abusing them physically and fostering a fear of it. Jeanetta’s father attacked her very severely, stomping her so hard that her heart broke, which led to her death on May 8, 2023.

The whole scope of the assault didn’t become explicit until Gatewood dialed 911 and Jeanetta stopped breathing, which led to police involvement. An extensive number of injuries, including bruises, broken bones, and signs of ongoing mistreatment, were discovered during the investigation. In addition to the charges of first-degree criminal murder, Gatewood also faces charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child, and intimidating a witness. Gatewood is awaiting sentencing and might spend an extra year in prison on top of the suggested 25 years to life sentence for the murder accusation. While the community struggles to understand the awful facts of this case, the court may decide to impose a longer term.
