6 years since an I-Team inquiry discovered a significant DNA backlog and unprocessed murder proof in Illinois laboratories, significant DNA backlog improvements had been made.
The amount of criminal investigations that require DNA analysis has drastically decreased over the past few years, according to Robin Woolery, the Illinois State Police’s deputy director of forensic services.
The speed at which a company can use its results to capture or identify its bad guy is the real test, according to Woolery.
For every case that enters all laboratories in the state, including homicide, sexual harassment, any cases involving an act over a person, and theft of property cases, Woolery claims that there was a 37% reduction in the DNA delay. Additionally, it now only takes 4 months to complete the project instead of 7.
