Southcoast Health has once again been recognized as one of the best places to work in the country. The local health system has earned a spot on Newsweek’s 2025 list of America’s Greatest Workplaces, an honor that highlights just how much it values its employees.
This marks the second year in a row Southcoast has made the list—an achievement that speaks volumes about its commitment to building a positive, supportive work environment.
A Win for the Whole Team
“This award is all about our people,” said Southcoast Health President and CEO David O. McCready. “Our team brings energy, compassion, and collaboration to everything they do. It’s their dedication that makes Southcoast a great place to work—and a great place for our patients, too.”
McCready added that the recognition is a proud moment, not just for leadership, but for every employee—from front desk staff to nurses, doctors, and maintenance teams—who helps make Southcoast’s culture what it is.
What the Award Means
The Newsweek award, created in partnership with research firm Plant-A Insights, is based on surveys from more than 1.5 million employees across the country, along with a deep dive into workplace policies and public data. In all, over 250,000 companies were considered.
Southcoast wasn’t just named to the list—it was one of only six hospitals in Massachusetts to earn a 5-star rating, the highest possible. That puts it in elite company, showing that Southcoast is doing something truly special.
Why Employees Love Working at Southcoast
So, what makes Southcoast stand out?
According to feedback gathered internally and from independent surveys, employees consistently mention teamwork, inclusion, and a strong sense of purpose. Many say they feel heard and supported. Others point to the way different departments work together so smoothly, creating a sense of shared mission.
And it’s not just about good vibes—Southcoast backs that culture with solid benefits, career development opportunities, and leadership that actually listens.
Bigger Than Just an Award
This kind of recognition has real-world impact. For hospitals like Southcoast, being seen as a great workplace helps attract talented people who want to stay long-term. That’s especially important in healthcare, where staffing challenges are common.
Better employee retention also means better care for patients. When staff feel engaged and appreciated, they bring their best to the job every day. That leads to stronger outcomes and a more positive experience for everyone who walks through the doors.
What’s Ahead
Even with this big win, Southcoast’s leadership says they’re not done yet.
“This recognition motivates us to keep improving,” McCready said. “We’re going to keep listening, keep learning, and keep making Southcoast the best place it can be—for our staff and our community.”
The health system plans to build on this momentum with more staff development programs, continued investment in diversity and inclusion, and new ways to celebrate and support their teams.
Southcoast Health, which includes Charlton Memorial, St. Luke’s, and Tobey hospitals, has been serving the southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island region for decades. And now, more than ever, it’s being recognized not just for its care—but for how it cares for its people.
