A rare kind of cancer took the life of McCanna “Mac” Sinise, the son of Gary Sinise. He was 33 years old.

With the message, “In Honor & Memory of McCanna ‘Mac’ Sinise 1990-2024,” the Gary Sinise Foundation announced the news of Sinise’s passing on Instagram on Tuesday. The foundation released a statement stating that Mac’s diagnosis of chordoma, an extremely uncommon cancer, occurred on August 8, 2018. As per the organization, chordoma is a type of cancer that starts from the spine and typically affects only 300 individuals annually in the United States.

The 68-year-old actor disclosed that his son passed away on January 5, 2024, at 3:25 p.m., and was buried on January 23 in a lengthy memorial to Mac that he posted on his web page.

“We are devastated and currently dealing as best we can, just like any other family that has experienced such a loss. It is incredibly tough for parents to lose a kid, Sinise noted.

He went on, “My heart went out to everyone who lost a family member and to everyone who has experienced a comparable loss. In one way or another, we’ve all faced it. I have had the pleasure of meeting numerous families of our deceased soldiers over the years. It’s quite difficult and heartbreaking.”

“Our family’s cancer battle continued for 5 ½ years, and it got increasingly difficult as the months went on,” Sinise continued. Although we are heartbroken to be without him, we find solace in the knowledge that Mac is no longer in pain and feels touched and motivated by how he handled it.”

“He battled a cancer for which there is no treatment, but he did not give up. Mac enjoyed watching movies, and we used to tell him that he looked like the soldier at the conclusion of the amazing movie “1917,” who is rushing across the battlefield while bombs go out all over him, taking him one at a time, but he continues getting back up and keeps moving forward, refusing to give up.”

“I feel incredibly fortunate, blessed, and proud to be his father,” Sinise said.
