Authorities have confirmed that Robert Card, the suspect in the tragic shooting spree that claimed 18 lives and left 13 wounded in Maine, has been discovered deceased.
The 40-year-old Robert Card, a U.S. Army reservist from Bowdoin, Maine, is believed to have taken his own life, a law enforcement official reported, requesting anonymity
The shootings took place at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley in Lewiston. Robert Card’s erratic behavior during training led to a mental health evaluation in mid-July, as disclosed by a U.S. official. Subsequently, murder warrants were issued against him. Earlier, a bulletin revealed Card’s two-week commitment to a mental health facility last summer due to alarming statements about a military base. He was training with the Army Reserve in West Point, New York, at the time.
Intensive search efforts, spanning vast wooded areas and family-owned property, were conducted by authorities. The shelter-in-place order, in effect for nearly 48 hours, was lifted Friday evening. The victims, ranging from 14 to 76 years old, were remembered at a news conference led by State Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck.
A firearm was recovered in Robert Card’s abandoned vehicle, found at a boat ramp, currently undergoing testing for its involvement in the shooting
A suicide note addressed to his son and Robert Card’s cell phone was discovered at a linked residence, complicating the search process. As investigations continue, the Card family’s deep-rooted presence in Bowdoin has come to light. Residents have expressed their grief and anger, reflecting on the profound loss suffered by the community. Charges against Robert Card for 18 counts of murder have been confirmed by the police. The tragic event has left Maine, known for its low homicide rates, in shock and mourning, prompting a call for unity and remembrance from Governor Janet Mills.
