Kari Lake, the unsuccessful Republican candidate for governor of Arizona, criticized the NFL on Thursday evening for what she saw as a questionable judgment made during the season opener between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions.
The pregame festivities featured a version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by a Kansas City youth choir. The song, which is also referred to as the Black national anthem, was performed before “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Lake expressed her annoyance on social media.
“According to what I’ve heard, the NFL is still attempting to push this divisive crap down Americans’ throats. I won’t put up with it,” she tweeted. “America has just ONE National Anthem, and that Anthem is color blind.”
The Black national anthem was played throughout Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona, a game won by the Kansas City Chiefs over the Philadelphia Eagles. Lake included a photo of herself sitting throughout the anthem.
