To establish name deadlines for submission and a procedure for spelling fixes for presidential elections in California, Governor Newsom approved legislation written by State Senator Dodd.
Senate Bill 437 makes it clear that contenders can modify their names if they show improperly on ballots and establishes a due date for submitting the full names of the president and vice president to the Secretary of State’s office not less than 75 days before the general election.
State Senator Dodd said, “We must make assured our presidential elections are honest and open now as much as ever. “By having Gov. Newsom sign my legislation, we can safeguard the democratic process’s foundational free election system. It will offer more protections to this significant practice at a time of growing division and disagreement.
Political parties must follow certain procedures outlined in the California Elections Code when providing the Secretary of State’s office alongside the full names of the presidential and vice presidential candidates for consideration on ballots.
