The woman, four months pregnant, had not been officially identified by the Independence police, but a family friend raising funds for cremation costs revealed her name as Karla Brown in an interview with the Kansas City Star.
The unfortunate event involved gunfire at the mall, leaving two others with leg injuries, while the suspected shooter was shot in the back by law enforcement. A 21-year-old resident of Independence faces charges of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the mall shooting. The charges are expected to be updated in light of Karla Brown’s demise.
The defendant, currently in custody with a $250,000 cash-only bond, is scheduled for a bond hearing on Tuesday, with no assigned public defender as of now
