Several Fraudsters Accused of Stealing Billions of COVID-19 Reliefs Using Dead People and Prisoners’ Social Security Numbers

Several fraudsters were accused of stealing billions of COVID-19 reliefs, which were supposed to combat the pandemic, using the Social Security numbers of dead people and prisoners in different states.

According to AP News, thousands of fraudsters stole COVID-19 relief funds of over $200 billion under the three major relief programs launched to provide financial assistance to eligible residents greatly affected by the pandemic.

However, the Bureau of Prisons refused to cooperate with authorities and declined to give information that may help during the investigation, as the personal information of several prisoners was used by fraudsters to steal COVID-19 reliefs.

Over 2,000 Fraudsters Face Charges After Stealing COVID-19 Relief Meant for Eligible Recipients

Following the investigation, over 2,000 fraudsters faced charges after using stolen information to steal COVID-19 relief meant to be received by several eligible recipients in different parts of the state.

As part of the administration’s action against the case, they introduced stricter regulations to combat fraud cases in the state following the arrest of several fraudsters.
