Klete Keller, 41, avoided prison time by pleading guilty to a federal felony and received additional penalties, including six months of home detention and monthly community service totaling 10 hours

The two-time gold medalist, seen in Capitol riot videos wearing a Team USA jacket, initially faced seven federal counts but ultimately admitted to obstructing an official proceeding. Federal prosecutors, who sought a 10-month prison term, described Klete Keller’s actions as “unconscionable” and a lasting “stain on this country’s narrative.” However, citing Klete Keller’s cooperation and genuine remorse, they recommended a lighter sentence. The defense argued Klete Keller had suffered during three years of pre-trial detention and had been a flawless probationer.

Judge Richard Leon emphasized the unique nature of the case, acknowledging Klete Keller’s remorse and cooperation

Leon urged Klete Keller to speak to young adults about learning from mistakes, expressing an expectation of success. Keller affirmed his understanding of the criminality of his actions, apologized to lawmakers and the public, and pledged not to repeat such behavior.

Klete Keller’s extensive cooperation with the government, including admission of guilt within a week of the riot, played a significant role in the sentencing decision. The former Olympian’s voluntary work with the Prison Professors Charitable Corporation and plea for leniency based on personal growth were also considered. Klete Keller’s case is among over 1,200 individuals charged in connection with the January 6 riot.
