A Michigan State Trooper is currently in the process of recovery after sustaining injuries in an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the demise of a suspect
Michigan State Police Col. James Grady II detailed that the state police’s fugitive team was apprehending a suspect who was wanted for multiple felony warrants. As per Grady’s account, the suspect reportedly threatened the team with a firearm, prompting the Michigan state troopers to retaliate with gunfire. Tragically, the suspect succumbed to the exchange, while one of the Michigan state troopers sustained severe injuries. Grady confirmed that the Michigan state trooper underwent surgery on Wednesday evening and is anticipated to make a complete recovery. However, neither the trooper nor the suspect has been officially identified by Grady.
This incident signifies the second time this year that Michigan state troopers have been involved in a fatal shooting within Saginaw County
The previous instance involved the shooting of 58-year-old Thomas C. Baskin on August 11. Baskin, who had reportedly assaulted a woman and barricaded himself in his Saginaw residence, engaged in gunfire with the troopers, resulting in his demise.
Saginaw County Prosecutor John McColgan Jr. deemed the shooting justified in October. However, McColgan has opted not to disclose the identities of the troopers involved in the encounter with Baskin. This decision raises questions surrounding the transparency of such incidents involving Michigan state troopers and their engagement in fatal altercations within the county.
