Man indicted for murder and attempted murder in connection with Brooklyn rampage

Weng Sor, a former Las Vegas resident, is accused of driving a U-Haul truck into pedestrians, cyclists, and e-bike riders, endangering other motorists and pedestrians waiting to cross the street. The 62-year-old allegedly began his path of destruction on Feb. 13, 2023, in Sunset Park and ended it in Bay Ridge, driving onto the sidewalk and hitting a pedestrian and a police officer who was injured by an e-bike dragged by the truck. Sor was eventually caught by police after they boxed him in near the entrance to a tunnel leading from Brooklyn to Manhattan.

Yi Jie Ye, a father of three, died of head injuries after being struck while riding an e-bike near Bay Ridge Parkway and Fifth Avenue. The other injuries sustained by individuals included rib fractures, a pelvic fractures, broken legs, and other bone injuries, for which many victims needed surgery.

Sor has been charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, assault, and attempted assault in the 25-count indictment

Sor was arraigned before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun and ordered held without bail. The accused is expected to appear in court again on May 31. The Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a statement that the incident was “terrifying” and that “we will now seek to bring the defendant to justice and to keep the streets of Brooklyn safe.”
