A man who deliberately hit a 64-year-old woman with his pickup truck and subsequently transported her lifeless body to a remote wooded area has been found guilty of murder and other offenses in southwestern Michigan.
Colby Martin, aged 31, was convicted of first-degree murder on Wednesday, which carries a mandatory life sentence in prison
The incident occurred in 2021 when Martin struck Melody Rohrer while she was taking a walk in Van Buren County. He then placed her body inside his vehicle and engaged in sexual acts.
Despite not knowing Rohrer personally, Martin admitted during a police interview that he had hit her and left the body in St. Joseph County. However, he denied any involvement in sexual acts. Throughout the trial, Martin’s attorney argued that the incident was an accident. Nonetheless, the jury concluded that it was a premeditated murder.
Richard Rohrer, the victim’s husband, expressed gratitude for the outcome but acknowledged the absence of joy in his family’s hearts
The conviction ensures that Martin will face life imprisonment for his heinous crime. The case shocked the local community, highlighting the importance of safety measures while out in public. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly.
The sentencing for Colby Martin is scheduled to take place in the near future, bringing some closure to the victim’s family and the community affected by this tragic event.
