Sayfullo Saipov, a 35-year-old Uzbekistan citizen, drove a rented pickup truck along a popular bike path, running over more than 20 people and killing eight, including two Americans, a Belgian woman, and five friends from Argentina.
A man who carried out a terrorist attack on a New York City bike path in 2017 has been given eight consecutive life sentences
The attack ended when he crashed into a school bus several blocks away from the start of the attack, leaving a 14-year-old child with serious brain injuries. Saipov admitted to being inspired by ISIS, and prosecutors said he was proud of the attack, which he carried out in response to calls from the group’s leader.
Saipov was given the maximum time for 18 attempted murders, including four children, and will serve 260 years consecutively with two more life sentences to be served concurrently. He will likely be incarcerated at the Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado, alongside some of the world’s most notorious criminals, including drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols.
If he is sent to the prison, Saipov will join 316 male inmates at the secure facility where inhabitants spend 22 to 23 hours a day in their cells
Multiple lawsuits against ADX Florence have described a chaotic environment, with one lawsuit stating inmates “interminably wail, scream and bang on the walls of their cells. Some mutilate their bodies with razors, shards of glass, writing utensils, and whatever other objects they can obtain.”
