A quiet Wednesday morning in Sunrise turned into a crime scene after a brutal double stabbing left one woman dead and a man seriously injured. Police arrested a 21-year-old man, Jackson Julian Sagesse Jr., just moments after the attack, which happened around 1:40 a.m. at The Retreat at Sawgrass Village, a typically peaceful apartment complex near the Sawgrass Mills area.

Neighbors say they woke up to flashing police lights and sirens—something they’re not used to seeing in this area.

Victims Found with Neck Wounds, One Dead at Scene

The incident began when police received a 911 call from a man who said he had been stabbed in the neck. Officers rushed to the front of the complex and found him seriously wounded but conscious. He told them his friend, a woman, was still inside his car in the parking garage.

When officers located the car—a black Mercedes-Benz—they discovered the woman in the backseat. She had multiple stab wounds to her neck and throat and was unresponsive. A bloody steak knife was lying on the front passenger seat.

Despite life-saving efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Victim Identified as 28-Year-Old Boca Raton Woman

The woman has been identified as Hailey Hosford, a 28-year-old from Boca Raton. Friends and family describe her as vibrant, talented, and full of life. She worked as a stylist and was known in the area for her creativity and love for helping others feel their best.

Her stepfather, Rich Ehmke, said the family is devastated.

“Our family is destroyed,” he told reporters. “This is beyond horrific. We wish this upon no family to deal with something like this.”

Suspect Arrested with Knife in Pocket

Police didn’t have to look far to find the suspect. Officers located Jackson Sagesse Jr. not long after arriving on the scene. He had another steak knife in his pocket at the time of his arrest, according to the arrest report.

Sagesse is now facing charges of premeditated murder and attempted felony murder. He remains behind bars at the Broward Main Jail and is being held without bond.

No Clear Motive Yet, Police Say

Investigators are still trying to determine what led to the deadly attack. The relationship between Sagesse and the victims has not been made public, and a possible motive hasn’t been released.

Detectives are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from the apartment complex. At this point, police say the investigation is still active and more details will be released when available.

Community in Shock After Violence in Seemingly Safe Area

Residents of the Retreat at Sawgrass Village are struggling to come to terms with what happened. Many say they’ve never experienced anything like this in their neighborhood.

“It’s scary,” said resident Ty Vassil. “What would drive somebody to do something like that here? This is usually such a quiet place. It’s extremely sad to hear.”

Some residents have already started discussions about increasing security around the complex, especially in the garage area.

Loved Ones Grieve for Hailey Hosford

As the investigation continues, friends and family of Hailey Hosford are mourning the loss of a young woman taken far too soon. Social media posts from loved ones remember her as warm-hearted, driven, and someone who made others feel seen and heard.

One friend wrote, “Hailey was the kind of person who lit up the room. She had a way of making everyone feel special. I can’t believe she’s gone.”

The male victim, who has not yet been publicly identified, is still recovering from his injuries.
