British neonatal nurse Lucy Letby, 33, has been pronounced guilty of murdering seven newborns and attempting to murder six other infants

Lucy Letby had pleaded not guilty to all 22 charges against her. Following a 22-day deliberation, a jury composed of seven women and four men rendered the guilty verdict at Manchester Crown Court on Friday. Lucy Letby was found responsible for seven counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder. However, the jury could not arrive at decisions regarding six counts of attempted murder related to four infants. In response to the conviction, the families of the victims issued a collective statement expressing the unimaginable pain of losing or having a child harmed in such circumstances.

Operating as a neonatal nurse at Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016

Lucy Letby took the lives of seven infants, employing various methods such as injecting air into the bloodstream, stomach, overfeeding with milk, physical assaults, and insulin poisoning. It is noted that Lucy Letby was the sole staff member on duty during each incident of child collapse.

The verdict brings to light a series of tragic events that transpired over a six-year investigation. Prosecutor Nick Johnson described Lucy Letby as a “calculated opportunist” who exploited the vulnerabilities of premature and ill babies to carry out her malevolent acts.
