President Biden and Speaker McCarthy would speak in real on Monday after the president returns from Japan, according to Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who described their conversation regarding the president on the debt ceiling and approaching failure as “productive” on Sunday.

McCarthy said to the media, “I think it was a useful telephone call,” saying that Biden had called him from Air Force One.

In an attempt to restart negotiations before Biden returns to Washington from the Group of Seven (G7) summit, the White House set up the telephone call. He returned to the United States early from his international tour to attend the discussions.

Following the call, the White House announced in a transcript that staff-level discussions would resume Sunday night before McCarthy and Biden’s meeting on Monday. McCarthy stated that Reps. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) and Garret Graves (R-La.) will participate in those conversations.
