Some people abuse prescription drugs and combine them with opioids to amplify their effects, although doing so greatly raises the risk of accidental opioid intoxication and death.
As a result, gabapentin has been classified as a prohibited substance in several American states, and more may follow similarly.
Additionally, there have been requests for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to designate the drug as a legally controlled substance, but other medical professionals are opposed to this idea.
Since the FDA approved gabapentin in 1993, it has become a substance that is not officially restricted.
It is frequently prescribed for seizures and pain in the nerves, a serious symptom that additional prescription drugs frequently are unable to treat.
