An inmate suspected of killing a deputy sheriff in Indianapolis trying to escape while he was being transferred in a van was charged last Thursday with murder, and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against the inmate.
The inmate had been jailed since September 2022
Orlando Mitchell, an inmate, used his handcuff chain to strangle a 61-year-old deputy while returning the inmate last Monday to the Indianapolis Criminal Justice Center after a hospital visit.
The inmate was charged last Thursday with two counts of murder, robbery resulting in bodily harm, and an inmate trying to escape.
The court submitted paperwork last Thursday seeking the death penalty against inmate Mitchell. The filing includes four aggravating circumstances, including that the police were killed while performing his duty.

At the time of the attempted escape, inmate Mitchell was awaiting trial for murdering his ex-girlfriend
The public attorney representing inmate Mitchell didn’t respond to a request for comment about the case seeking the death penalty of their inmate client.
