In 2024, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she has no plans to compete for a Senate seat

As per her office, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez isn’t running for a position in the US Senate in the next year. This will allow Democratic senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York to stand for reelection without facing any competition from the progressive lawmaker.

She has no intention of running for the Senate in 2024. According to Ocasio-Cortez’s publicist Lauren Hitt, she has no plans to challenge Gillibrand in the general election.

Ocasio-Cortez was one of many rumored opponents Gillibrand would face in the state primary as she began her re-election run in January for a 3rd term in the Senate.

The declaration comes after several democrats from New York, namely Mondaire Jones and reps Jamaal Bowman and Ritchie Torres, said they were not thinking about initiating a challenge.

The collapse of 4 seats to Republican candidates in New York during the midterm elections this past year was a major shock to the Democrats, who were largely held responsible for the party abandoning control of Congress. Democrats’ top political priorities are thought to be preventing an intense challenge from the more progressive segments of the party and focusing on making up the losses from 2022.
