If Georgia Is New CFP No. 1, Then Who? Ohio State, Michigan, TCU, and TCU?

• Tuesday night’s College Football Playoff rankings had Georgia at the top, followed by Ohio State, Michigan, and TCU. As a result of their convincing victory over then-ranked #1 Tennessee on Saturday, the Bulldogs jumped three spots in the rankings.
• Clemson, who had been ranked fourth in the first rankings released by the selection committee last week, also suffered a loss, paving the opportunity for movement within the top four.
• This was a holding pattern for Ohio State. Big Ten foe Michigan jumped from fourth to third place, passing Ohio State. With their three-place rise to No. 4, TCU joined the ranks of the nation’s top four undefeated teams.
• The University of Oregon, also from the Pac-12, and No. 7 LSU (following the Tigers’ upset of No. 2 Alabama) followed Tennessee in the rankings, which dropped to No. 5.
• As the athletic director at North Carolina State and chairman of the selection committee, Boo Corrigan praised TCU for their six victories over teams with winning records.
• Since the rankings for the College Football Playoff were introduced in 2014, this is the first season in which neither Clemson nor Alabama are in the top six.
• Five of the eight College Football Playoff crowns have been shared by the Tigers and the Crimson Tide.
• Good luck keeping the Tide out if Alabama can win the SEC and beat Georgia in the process. The Tide’s path to the SEC title game is now blocked by LSU, which would need to lose its next two conference games against Arkansas and Texas A&M.
• The assumption here is that Alabama will prevail. The committee ranked Mississippi as the eleventh-best team in the country, and the Tide will face them on Saturday. After that, they’ll travel to Austin Peay before facing Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

Match of The Week

TCU’s unbeaten season is validated by its top-four finish. Because they needed several fourth-quarter comebacks to stay undefeated, the committee put the Horned Frogs at No. 7 last week, behind Alabama.

Last Saturday, TCU trailed Texas Tech heading into the fourth quarter and needed another comeback to win, but Tennessee, Alabama, and Clemson’s losses helped the Horned Frogs in these rankings.
