The great-nephew of French President Emmanuel Macron’s wife, Brigitte Macron, was assaulted on Monday evening by anti-government protesters outside a chocolate shop he runs in northern France.
Assault on great-nephew of French president’s wife outside chocolate shop deemed ‘unacceptable’ and ‘unspeakable
Jean-Baptiste Trogneux, 30, was returning to his apartment above the Trogneux chocolate shop in Amiens when he was attacked and insulted about his family’s connection to the President and his wife. The victim’s father, Jean-Alexandre Trogneux, stated that his son was hit on the head, arms, and legs before the attackers ran away. Brigitte Macron issued a rare statement condemning the attack, calling it “cowardice, stupidity, and violence” and expressing her complete solidarity with her family.
President Emmanuel Macron also spoke out against the assault, describing it as “unacceptable” and “unspeakable” because Trogneux is his great-nephew. He added that he expects justice to run its course in the matter. Local police have arrested eight people in connection with the attack.
Trogneux is undergoing medical checks and awaiting the results of a scan
The Jean Trogneux chocolate shop has been run by Brigitte Macron’s family for six generations and is famous for a sugary local almond-based treat called the Amiens Macaron. Brigitte Macron met her husband while she was a teacher at a private school in Amiens in the 1990s.
