A former police officer charged with the fatal shooting of an unarmed Black man pleaded not guilty in Louisiana.
Former Police Officer Charged After Fatally Shooting Unarmed Black Man During Domestic Disturbance Investigation in Louisiana
A 43-year-old former police officer named Alexander Tyler was charged after fatally shooting an unarmed Black man identified as Alonzo Bagley during a domestic disturbance investigation in Louisiana, wherein the former police officer reportedly shot the victim while he was trying to flee.
According to a report published in CNN, the former police officer and another officer were responding to a report about a domestic disturbance in the victim’s house, where they found Bagley jumping off their apartment from the balcony; however, the former police officer chased him and immediately shot the victim.
Following the tragic incident, the victim’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the former police officer and sought more than $10 million as they claimed that the shooting incident proved that the former police officer was only one of thousands of authorities who used their power and force against the Black community.
Former Police Officer Pleads Not Guilty of Two Charges Against Him After Fatally Shooting Unarmed Black Man During Investigation
Following the arrest, the former police officer was charged with negligent homicide and felony after fatally shooting the unarmed Black man; however, the former police officer pleaded not guilty to both charges despite the evidence.
If the former police officer is found guilty to both charges, he could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison as each charge filed against the former police officer carries a sentence of up to five years in prison, Revolt TV reported.
