This incident occurred in mid-August when Irizarry was found seated in his car.
A former Philadelphia Police officer, Mark Dial, has turned himself into law enforcement, facing a murder charge concerning the shooting of 27-year-old Eddie Irizarry
Dial surrendered on a criminal warrant, as confirmed by his attorney, Fortunato Perri Jr. District Attorney Larry Krasner disclosed multiple charges against former Philadelphia Police Officer Dial, including murder, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and official oppression. He emphasized the traumatic nature of the bodycam footage shown to Irizarry’s family and their attorneys.
Former Philadelphia Police Officer Dial subsequently removed an injured Irizarry from the car and transported him to a hospital. Authorities clarified that the shooting occurred after officers observed Irizarry driving erratically, leading to a pursuit.
The department claimed a traffic stop preceded the shooting, alleging a knife threat
However, a review of body-worn cameras contradicted this account. Former Philadelphia Police officer Dial, a five-year veteran, was later suspended pending dismissal for non-cooperation with the investigation.
Former Philadelphia Police Officer Dial’s attorney, Perri, contends that former Philadelphia Police Officer Dial acted in self-defense. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney expressed condolences to Irizarry’s loved ones and conveyed confidence in the District Attorney’s pursuit of justice. Departing Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw pledged a thorough administrative investigation for closure and justice in Irizarry’s tragic death.
