A fire officer who died along with a colleague fire officer while battling a fire aboard a cargo ship in New Jersey last July 5 was promoted to fire officer captain during his emotional funeral service last Thursday.
Hundreds of mourners, including dozens of fire officers and law enforcement officers, came to the Cathedral of Sacred Heart in Newark to attend the funeral service for fire officer August Acabou, a native of Newark who had been a fire officer of the city for nine years.
The fire officer was recalled as a dedicated fire officer who was always making people around him laugh.

Newark Mayor said that Fire Officer August Acabou is a Newark boy who made his way here with a noble profession. The fire officer lay to rest here in his native land.
Fire Officer Acabou and fire officer Wayne Brooks both died while fighting the fire aboard the Grande Costa d’Ivoire. The cause of the fire remains unknown. The funeral service for fire officer Brooks will be held today.
