Fani Willis, the Fulton County DA, issued a forceful nine-page response to House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, who initiated an investigation into her office just hours before Trump’s recent court appearance on charges linked to the 2020 election interference.

In her pointed letter, Fani Willis characterized Jordan’s actions as “offensive” and accused him of being “misinformed” about legal practices and ethical obligations. Jordan’s inquiry sought information on Fani Willis’ use of federal funding and her office’s communications with the Justice Department and special counsel Jack Smith, who brought charges against Trump in classified documents cases related to his 2020 election actions. Fani Willis condemned this as a blatant attempt to hinder the Georgia criminal proceeding and propagate misleading partisan narratives.
Responding to Jordan’s actions, Fani Willis emphasized that Congress has no constitutional basis to intervene or oversee an ongoing criminal investigation in Georgia. This exchange comes after Fani Willis brought racketeering charges against Trump and 18 associates for their alleged efforts to undermine President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in Georgia. Trump pleaded not guilty to these charges, marking the fourth set he has faced in the past year.

While the probe into Bragg lost momentum, House Republicans face limited options to contest Trump’s charges given their investigation powers. Fani Willis did provide some details on her office’s federal funding in her response to Jordan but predominantly criticized the House GOP’s request for potentially divulging non-public information about an ongoing investigation.
Fani Willis firmly asserted that candidates for elected office, including the presidency, are not exempt from criminal investigation or prosecution, underlining the core democratic principle of equality before the law.
